Privacy policy

This policy explains what information we collect when you use this site. It also explains why we collect it, who handles it, how long we keep it, and what you can do about it. It covers the site, readtheopen.com, and the help assistant on it. The site is run by Bowtie Capital LLC, an Illinois limited liability company ("we", "us").

In short: we collect what we need to run memberships and answer questions. We do not sell your information. We do not use advertising trackers.

What we collect, and why

Your account

  • Your email address, and your name if you give it. We use these to create your account, sign you in and send you what you signed up for.
  • Sign-in and visit records. You sign in with a link that we email to you, so we hold no password for you. Ghost records when you sign in and when you were last on the site.
  • Your approximate location. When you sign up or first sign in, Ghost looks up the country and region that your IP address maps to, and saves them on your account. To do that, Ghost sends your IP address to a lookup service called GeoJS.
  • Where you came from. When you sign up, Ghost saves the page, the site or the link that led you here, so that we can see what is working.
  • Your email preferences. These are the emails you choose to get.

Payments

Stripe takes payments. You enter your card details on Stripe's pages. Your full card number goes to Stripe. It does not pass through this site or Ghost. Stripe tells Ghost your plan, price, renewal date, whether your subscription is active, and the last four digits of your card, so that your account page can show them. If you cancel and type a reason, Ghost and Stripe both save the reason with your subscription.

Emails

Ghost sends our emails, such as sign-in links. For each newsletter, Ghost records whether it was delivered, whether you opened it and which links you clicked. We use these numbers to see what is being read. To stop this, unsubscribe.

Visits to the site

Ghost has built-in site analytics. It uses no cookies. It counts unique visitors within 24-hour windows, and it records the page viewed, the site that sent you and your country. When you are signed in, it also records your member ID and whether you are a free or paid member.

Notifications

If you turn on notifications, we store your device's push address and keys with your member ID, on Cloudflare, so that we can send them. Your browser's push service (Apple, Google, Mozilla or Microsoft) carries each message, encrypted so that the service can't read it. To stop them, turn them off on the daily read page or sign out. When a membership ends, we delete the address within about an hour.

The help assistant

The help page has an assistant that answers questions about membership, billing and the course. It runs on Cloudflare and uses Anthropic's Claude to write replies, so what you type is sent to Anthropic. It never gives trading advice.

  • We store the messages you send, the replies, any feedback you give and any support tickets, for up to 180 days.
  • To limit how many messages one person can send, we store a salted hash of your IP address. We do not store the IP address itself. Cloudflare, like any web host, can see your IP address when your browser connects.
  • If you ask for a person, the assistant may email us your request through Resend.

Please do not type card numbers, passwords or details of your trades into the assistant.

Emails you send us

If you email us, we keep your message and our reply so that we can help you.

Cookies and similar tools

We do not use cookies for advertising, and we do not use them to follow you around the web. These are the ones you may meet on this site:

  • Ghost's sign-in cookie (ghost-members-ssr). Ghost sets it when you sign in. It keeps you signed in. It is a first-party cookie, and it lasts about six months or until you sign out. A matching cookie named ghost-members-ssr.sig protects it from tampering. The site cannot keep you signed in without them.
  • Short-lived membership cookies. Ghost may also set two cookies named ghost-access and ghost-access-hmac. They last up to an hour and record which membership level you have, so that the site can show you the right pages.
  • Stripe's fraud-prevention cookies. Ghost loads Stripe's payment script on this site. Stripe may set cookies named __stripe_mid and __stripe_sid to help spot fraud. Stripe says they last one year and 30 minutes. Stripe's own checkout and billing pages may set cookies too.
  • Session storage. Ghost keeps a short list of the pages you viewed in your browser's session storage. It is cleared when you close the tab. If you sign up, Ghost uses it to record what led you to sign up.
  • Local storage. Two local storage items (rto-push and rto-push-sync) remember that notifications are on for this browser.

You can block or delete cookies in your browser. If you block the sign-in cookie, you will not be able to stay signed in.

Who handles your information

We use these companies to run the site. Each has its own privacy policy.

  • Ghost hosts the site and member accounts, sends our emails and runs the site analytics. Ghost also uses providers of its own, such as an email delivery service.
  • Stripe handles payments and billing.
  • Cloudflare runs the help assistant, stores its messages and sends notifications.
  • Anthropic provides the AI model that writes the help assistant's replies.
  • Resend sends us an email when you ask the assistant for a person.
  • GeoJS turns an IP address into a country and region when Ghost asks it to.
  • TradingView makes our charts. If a page loads a chart directly from TradingView, TradingView may collect information from your browser, such as your IP address.

These companies may store and process information in the United States and in other countries. We do not sell your information, and we do not share it for advertising. We may share information when the law requires it, or to stop fraud or abuse.

How long we keep it

  • Account information: for as long as your account exists.
  • Help assistant messages, feedback and tickets: up to 180 days.
  • Emails to us: as long as we need them to deal with your request.

Some records can outlast your account. Ghost keeps a record of each newsletter it sent, including the address it went to, so that it can show statistics. Stripe, and we, may keep payment and tax records where the law requires it.

Your choices

  • Unsubscribe. Every email has an unsubscribe link. You can also choose which emails you get in your account. Unsubscribing from emails does not cancel a paid membership. To cancel, see how to cancel.
  • Correct your details. You can update your name and email address in your account.
  • Delete your account. Email help@readtheopen.com from the address on your account and ask us to delete it. We will delete your member record and cancel any paid subscription. See "How long we keep it" for what can remain.
  • Ask a question. Email us with any question about your information.

Children

This site is for adults. You must be 18 or older to use it. We do not knowingly collect information from anyone under 18. If you think a child has given us information, email us and we will delete it.

United States only

Paid membership is open to US residents only, and this policy is written for people in the United States.

Security

Card details go straight to Stripe. You sign in with emailed links instead of passwords. No online service is completely secure, so we cannot promise that your information will never be accessed without permission.

Changes to this policy

We may change this policy. We will post the new version here and change the date below. If a change is significant, we will also email members before it takes effect.
